What is Aromatherapy?

We all know how powerful scent can be – like when the smell of a certain dish brings you back to your mother’s cooking when you were a child or how someone’s perfume can remind you of your loved ones. Aromatherapy refers to how certain scents can actually improve your health.

The essential oils are then produced with special techniques of infusion, expression and distillation and are excreted from special glands and pores of the plants. In general, the lower the distillation temperature and pressure the better the essential oils.

Various cultures have used aromatherapy for thousands of years for both medicinal and health purposes. While a French chemist in the 1920s used the term “aromatherapy” after discovering that lavender oil helped relieve pain and assist healing for minor burns, the history of aromatherapy dates back to 4000 BC. Aromatherapy involves the use of volatile parts of plants (also known as essential oils) and can be aromatically inhaled to improve one’s psychological and physical wellbeing. The plants are picked at a specific hour of the day and in a specific season of the year, so as to conserve their most volatile substances.  Production of the essential oils  are done with special techniques of infusion, expression and distillation. The oils are then excreted from the pores and special glands of the plants. The distillation temperature and pressure are monitored at low ranges as it generally produce better essential oils.

Uses of Essential Oils

Because they lack fatty acids, essential oils aren’t technically oils at all. Rather, they’re highly concentrated plant components. Essential oil is the volatile part of leaves, roots, cortex, seeds and fruits of various flowers, plants and trees. In fact, aromatherapists consider the essential oils as the powerful soul of plants, because they come from the vital parts of agrarian plants, herbs and scented flowers and thus have unique therapeutic properties.

An important element of aromatherapy is synergy – the combination of various essential oils resulting in a more powerful effect than the oils would have on their own. BioAire Lifestyle offers a mix of aromatherapy essential oils that have been tried and tested to give you the best results. Our aroma therapeutic products are also made user friendly and safe for the general public to obtain benefits that have been linked to essential oils.

Health Benefits of Aromatherapy

Essential oils can have a healing effect mentally, physically and emotionally. Here are some examples of the ways your health can benefit from aromatherapy:

(1) It helps relieve stress – Aromatherapy is perhaps most popularly known for and used for stress relief. A few different combinations of essential oils are well known for their ability to soothe your senses and help manage one’s anxiety. Some common scents known as relaxants are lemon oil, lavender, vetiver and bergamot essential oils. Lemon oil is in fact known to improve one’s mood and reduce outbursts of anger.

(2) It acts as an antidepressant – Another popular known use for aromatherapy is to decrease feelings of depression. The most common antidepressant essential oils are peppermint, chamomile, lavender and jasmine.

(3) It helps enhance memory – Some older people may have dementia or Alzheimer’s – an incurable disease that leads to memory loss and the inability to form short term memories. Studies have shown that aromatherapy may help to boost memory capacity for a certain amount of time after treatment. Sage is the most known essential oil used to enhance one’s momery.

(4) It boosts your memory levels – Most people seek to boost their energy through stimulants like coffee, cigarettes, or illegal drugs that may turn out to have very damaging effects on the body. With aromatherapy, there is no danger of that happening as essential oils like black pepper cardamom, jasmine and cinnamon are known to raise energy levels and stimulate the mind / body without leading to dangerous side effects.

(5) It helps eliminate headaches – Headaches happen to everyone and the truly nasty ones can sometimes prevent us from getting anything done. With aromatherapy, you can soothe your headaches without paying for expensive pharmaceuticals or massages. Essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary have been known to help eliminate headaches and migraines.

These are only a few examples of how aromatherapy can help improve your health and wellbeing. For an extensive list of essential oils and their health benefits, you can refer to our page on Aromatherapy Information.
